FRIDAY: The Capitol - Civic Engagement & Public Policy
The Nollie Jenkins Center, from Holmes County, 50 miles away, brings every day an inter-generational team. They have seized the opportunity to speak out in a powerful way, bringing their issues, their ideas and exposing their dream to see them achieved. Nollie Jenkins leaders are organizers. Artists on the ground act as facilitators, offering their skills and visual answers when needed.. As a teenager told us: "I love you guys, everything is possible." And we agree! We love you guys, you make everything possible.
Yet again, the notion that "COMMUNITY" means "POOR BLACK KIDS" is heard again.
See the plans and slide show published June 15 on the BLOG Nollie Jenkins Video Diary . "We were taken by their ability to concentrate, their persistence and the visions they were able to express in their art works." Thanks to the Nollie Jenkins Center, the Rankin High School Social Studies class and the Pelahatchie High School program, the Capitol is filled with powerful thoughts and statements, a Palaver tree, an Educational windmill, a representation of the schools to prison pipeline (small dolls caught in a conduit of plastic bottles), a map of Mali (a reference to the scholars of Peace in Mali), Symbolic ribbons and so much more. Speaking of these accomplishments, an organizer says: "To offer them to the public for a high cause, like social justice, will have a tremendous effect on all that ebullient youth."
