Creativity. Conversation. Community.
We insist that the director and other MMA staff participate in the seminar, as it is an opportunity for the commissioned artists to give back everything they have learned.
Seminar takes place around the table offered to the museum, precisely for the purpose of such a symbolic and real encounter.
10am - 12pm: Individual presentations highlighting what is expected from the seminar.
Use of the Liz Lerman Critical Exchange process: your positives on the work? /Questions from the commissioned artists / questions from participants to the artists and team members / Concerns.
1 - 3 pm: Analyzing the concerns / Identifying the main wishes for the C3 series next year.
C3, 2013, The Future is on the Table #4: a contemporary artwork and program OR a series of activities for communities during spring break?

- THE PLAN:
. Not forgetting that the C3 series started with the COCOON project by Kate Brown.
. Why does the Museum want to have projects of that sort? philosophically / pedagogically
. Goals for C3
- A list of the "I LIKE":
. the integration of art in an after-school program
. to discuss the different components
. students working at the MMA studio
. be in the space, including the lawn
. interactive
. continuity from Cocoon, with very different process
. such a very different experience
. to see youth was trust building and every day more comfortable
. feeling comfortable to be at the museum
. conversations about what is art
. not one tool artists brought was lost
. the energy of everyone who was given a chance
. so many layers, everyday a discovery
. connections and friendships that will last for years
. consciousness of others
. view art in a different way
. no point of reference for what is art vs structure
. the park as a blank canvas
. the museum as a destination for conversations
. dancers on top of our sculptures
. opportunity to have meaningful conversations
. opportunity for two very different groups to meet for the first time
. intensity of time frame
. intellectual part of the process
. ability to relate to others
. the garden as an art studio
. art as patience
. a different way of engaging communities
. the art installations in the garden as a picture of pluralism
. the end of the day is transformation with tensions
. generous participation that gave so many example of how Jackson, in its constant struggles for social justice, never seems to give up and abandon the dream.
- IDEAS THAT ONLY PARTLY WORKED:
. take photographs of groups around their sculpture props
. mailbox communication
. spring break
. time-lapse camera
. museum inviting political candidates to The Capitol props
. invitations to officials to come and talk to The Capitol teenager groups
. participation of the museum in the planned conversations
. participation of the Board in the planned conversations
. participation of an upper class community
. public performances by high school students
. collaborating on a video
. relationship with MidTown and MidTown Partners
. recording stories from seniors around Tougaloo
. bigger attendance at events, workshops and round tables, brought by the Museum and the blog
- THE MUSEUM ON A JOURNEY. And C3 as well
. the mission statement just changed, to reflect people's engagement in the arts
. energy given out by objects to people's lives
. protect the garden (and the museum?) to remain a blank canvas
. think of art as a breaker of the barriers built by some
. address race and dramatic events of the past
. look for being deeply rooted in this community with art at core
. involving local artists is still a challenge
. the museum's director tried not to control the project
. retool the way we work together
. the mind at the center of the arts
. let go of a lot of what we want to control
. think of the gap between the indoor and outdoor of the museum; why considering an artist as community based is not a value added to the artwork?
. C3 on the critical edge of contemporary art
. game theory points to "The Future is on the Table #4" at the garden
. establish capacity standards
. post-contemporary piece of art?
. why art and community go together?
. can we have communities without boundaries?
. artists' vision is key
. no classroom format but working with the artists in residence
. objects, art or not, as messengers, go-between enabling us to talk
. find secure destinations. Trust other organizations as safe spaces
. review how spring break can be linked to other time periods to better fit all needs
. a dream: the museum as a hub of arts offerings and cultural change
. start with questions
. "hearing a kid ask me "What is batik?" told me art was working"
. develop a C3 history
TOUGALOO'S PRESENTATION
Photos and program to come. Link to existing Slide show by Bruce O'Hara
"Do not know how active Tougaloo is in the civil rights movement right now, but it seemed that "The Future is on the Table" was a timely occasion for your group to feel activated and remember what the arts can do for building strong social ties and a deep sense of understanding of other communities. The way you offered to work with other groups in the future was invigorating for all, as the significance of our works is to be found more in what will remain of it than in the state it is in right now."
Part of the sculpture now resides in the Tougaloo Library.

"Convincing you that the practice of art is a fabulous catalyst for education, mind building and stimulating both sides of the brain. The challenge, now, is to keep the path alive, to expand the rippling effect, amplify the echo. "
